Dr James Oliver, Senior Clinical Psychologist

Dr James Oliver

Director and Principal Clinical Psychologist

James is Co‑Director of Set Point Psychology and an experienced clinician working both within high‑performance sport and NHS mental health services. Holding a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and an MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology, he brings a rare dual‑trained perspective that bridges elite performance and mental health.

James has extensive experience supporting mental health and wellbeing challenges within elite sporting environments. His previous and current roles span several Premier League football clubs, the national governing body for tennis, professional refereeing organisations, and the UK Sports Institute. As part of the UKSI practitioner network—a select group of psychologists working nationally—he contributes to the mental health provision for Olympic and Paralympic athletes competing within World Class Programmes.

Alongside his work within Premier League football, James supports both adult and adolescent athletes across a wide range of sports on a referral basis. He offers comprehensive psychological assessment, evidence‑based intervention, consultation with coaches, medical teams, and performance staff, and training via workshops. He also provides performance coaching for executives in non-sport settings, and training days designed to strengthen team functioning within high‑performance environments.

He works with a broad range of mental health and wellbeing challenges, with a special interest in anxiety presentations. His approach draws on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Compassion‑Focused Therapy, and ACT, alongside a growing specialism in EMDR, and evidence -based approach for trauma, in the context of high performance sport.

James brings lived experience of elite sport, having competed in professional tennis and coached in high‑performance programmes in the UK and Australia. This background gives him an insider’s understanding of the demands, culture, and pressures that shape high‑performance environments.
